2025 Pass Wide & Slow New Zealand
Awareness Rides 13 & 14 September
The PWAS Awareness Rides help to educate road users on how to approach and pass horse riders and carriage drivers safely on the road. This is the equestrian communities opportunity to share the Pass Wide & Slow message to road users across Aotearoa.
Thank you for expressing your interest in organising a PWAS awareness ride in your community.
The following is a brief outline of what you can expect and what we, PWASNZ, need from you.
DISTANCE OF RIDE/DRIVE:
This can be as long or as short as you feel you can cope with but should include some road work as the whole aim is to create awareness to motorists on how to pass us safely on the roads.
WALKERS/CYCLISTS, etc:
We encourage you to invite them to join you as, after all, they are all vulnerable road users.
ROUTE NZTA:
A traffic management plan (TMP) is triggered 50m from a highway. Local roads do not require a TMP but may require a conversation with the local roading team. This is not an ‘event’ or ‘protest’, simply put, its riders exercising their right to ride on the road abiding by road rules. If in a large group, single file and remember poo collection is something that requires a plan around please.
AGENCY SUPPORT:
NZ Police, Council road safety groups, elected members - we encourage you to strengthen relationships and understanding of horse riders safety on the road and make contact with local reps.
PWASNZ expectations
1. Your commitment to work with PWASNZ branded messaging and material only.
2. To use only PWASNZ material for the purpose of raising awareness of driver education in NZ.
3. To use the road safety messaging press release provided to engage with your local media (newspaper, radio, social media community pages). Consistent messaging is key to educating the public on what horse and carriage riders/drivers require.
4. To promote safety by wearing hi vis and a helmet.
5. We ask that all riders lead by example on the rides. All riders must wear hi-vis vest or top. All lead riders must also wear a riding helmet and we strongly reccomend that every rider wears a helmet on every ride.
6. PWASNZ social media pages will have regular updates. Use the Event Page you set up for your ride to share details of your ride.
7. PWASNZ will share regular content on the public social page and the private PWASNZ Awareness Rides Facebook group for ride organisers. If you have a specific request, please email Julia or Eve. This reduces messenger traffic.
8. Please ensure you follow the requests of Julia/Eve as to how to publicly advertise and promote your ride(s) so we get consistency of message.
9. Once your Ride is registered with PWASNZ we need you to set up your EVENT PAGE (see sample image below) - Eve will create offical PWASNZ imagery for your Event Page. This step is important so your local media and community can see what is happening well before September arrives.
10. Most importantly, we are all volunteers and doing life outside of this important work. Be respectful, patient and raise any concerns through the appropriate channels.
11. We cannot have any fee attached to any rides. We are here to assist if you need ideas of how to cover any costs that you may incurr. The key is to wear hi-vis vests with the message to PASS WIDE AND SLOW - KIA TŪPATO KIA ĀTA HAERE.
If you agree to the above, then your ride can be registered with PWASNZ
We require the start point location of your ride, post code, email and information on whether it is a private or public ride. Public means open to other VRUs and equestrians. Private is invite only.
We will submit to the UK PWAS team for it to be registered on the PWAS Worldwide Map.
You will be asked to join messenger. If your user name is different to the name you’ve given, please say so. Once in, go to pinned messages.
